Corona del Sol OL Keona Peat motivated in football after nearly dying

Keona Peat of Corona Del Sol speaks to a reporter during the Tempe Union School District Football Media Day at Valle Luna Mexican Restaurant on August 6, 2022 in Chandler, AZ.

Keona Peat is grateful for every day he gets up in the morning, let alone playing football.

Tempe Corona del Sol defensive lineman/senior offensive lineman nearly died in June 2021 after undergoing surgery for a broken leg. He fractured his tibia while playing basketball. Peat had an allergic reaction to the drugs he was given, he said.

“It was almost fatal,” Peat said. “I coded about three times in the hospital. I spent a month in the hospital.”

Due to the drug reaction, Peat was unable to have leg surgery as planned. It came later. There were complications. He had to be intubated in intensive care for three days. An injury to his vocal cord during intubation caused temporary paralysis of his vocal cord. He said he also suffered nerve damage to his left arm. For a moment he was unable to raise his arm.
