Emmy Category Review: Comedy Writing and Directing – Blog

by Christopher James

Does “Only Murders in the Building” have what it takes to unseat reigning champion “Hacks” in directing and writing? The writing and directing categories will be a strong indicator of what the Outstanding Comedy Series will win. The directing category overlaps with the comedy series 58% of the time and the writing category overlaps 50% of the time. Many worthy competitors face off in the stacked comedy fields. The general theme of both categories will be Headlines vs. Newcomers vs. returns.

At one end, ted lasso Y tricks they face off again for their second seasons. Weather ted lasso won last time tricks he won in both directing and writing. They will both have a great time competing with two hot new shows: Only murders in the building Y Abbott Elementary – which earned comedy series nominations. Finally, programs like barry Y atlanta resurfaced in these categories after being off the air for a few years. Will they be able to come back and take the prize from these newer shows that they’ve never had to face?

Analysis:

Pilots often do well in comedy directing nominations. But, since 2010, only three drivers have won (Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Y Happiness). However, there was a four-year stretch before that where a different driver won the directing award (2004-2007). This helps Only murders in the building, which had an impressive showing in its first season with 17 nominations. However, voters may be divided between the pilot, which set the tone for the season, and “The Boy From 6B,” which is the most impressive episode. The entire episode is told visually through the perspective of Teddy Dimas, a deaf principle from Arconia with his own secrets to hide. No show with multiple nominations in the directing category has won the award since Modern Family in 2012, when it had two episodes nominated.

ted lasso seems to have taken that stat to heart this year. Apple TV+’s crowd-pleasing comedy dominated the Emmys last year, but lost both writing and directing to tricks. This was likely due to multiple episodes being nominated in the same category, splitting their vote with no clear favorite. Weather tricks could win a second year in a row, just having one episode could be a winning strategy for ted lasso. “No Weddings and a Funeral” was also an excellent performance, filled with laughter and emotional fireworks.

working against tricks it’s the fact that he’s a repeat winner. There are fewer repeat winners here than in writing (only Transparent Y Modern Family repeated since 2010). The season two finale is triumphant, but it’s less flashy than some of the other nominees. Similarly, atlanta won this category previously in its first season in 2017. While “New Jazz” has a strong visual style that leans toward the absurd it meets After hours, the show did not enter the Outstanding Comedy Series race as it had in the past. Enthusiasm for the program among voters may have waned.

As for boldness, barry he is the most striking of the nominees. The episode “710N” features an extended motorcycle chase that is technically impressive, while also matching the show’s dark and offbeat humor. the third season of barry it has its fans and its detractors (I’m in the latter camp). However, the Emmys seemed to have accepted the show’s change in tone. With Hader in the director’s chair, this may be the perfect place to reward him and the show.

Every year, a multi-camera sitcom does the programming. This year, The Mrs. Pat Show on BET+ he received the nomination. This is the show’s only nomination, so it’s unlikely to win. However, it was a delightful submission that expertly and gracefully allowed each cast member to confront the lazy family patriarch who suddenly backs down. The best thing about covering the Emmys is seeing a show you’ve never seen before. I am very happy that this category has pushed me to look The Mrs. Pat Show.

You will earn: Bill Hader- barry
should win: Cherien Dabis- Only murders in the building
Revelation: MJ Delaney- ted lasso

Analysis:

It is the battle of the pilots against the defenders of the second season. Both Only murders in the building Y Abbott Elementary it had good performances in its first seasons, earning 17 nominations and 6 nominations respectively. Both pilots do a fantastic job establishing the premise. Only murders in the building sets up the titular murder and has a lot of fun uniting its three motley leads over their shared love of a podcast. Even more impressive, Abbott Elementary Build an entire world in just 22 minutes. Each teacher arrives fully formed from the moment they step onto the screen, and the comedy and conflict stem from the state of our world today. while I prefer Abbott Elementary in this category, the large number of nominations makes Only murders in the building the likely favorite among the pilots.

It has strong competition from the current champion, tricks. The season two finale expertly closes Deborah’s (Jean Smart) arc as she finds success with her comedy game that reveals her soul. However, the joy of the episode comes at the end when she pushes Ava (Hannah Einbender), a confident but conflicted joke writer, out of the nest just as she achieves success. It’s a beautiful portrait of a flawed but loving mentor/mentee relationship. last year’s sensation ted lasso is also in the running for “No Weddings and a Funeral,” the best episode of its second season, which some loved and others hated. The episode is quite dramatic, as Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham) deals with her complicated emotions surrounding her father’s death and Ted (Jason Sudeikis) uncovers her soul about the emotional wounds of her father’s suicide. her. As good as it is, the mixed reaction to the season and the episode’s relative dramatic weight could keep it from winning.

Two shows have two nominations each, taking up the middle of the category. Both barry Y What we do in the shadows I hope having two nominations will help propel them to victory. However, since 2010, only two shows have won when they have had multiple nominations in the category. Both of them (30 Rock, Schitt’s Creek) stood out clearly, as they both won to the end of their series. This means that both programs are likely to fall short of victory. It’s a shame, as no show made me laugh more last year than “El Casino” from What we do in the shadows.

You will earn: Steve Martin, John Hoffman – Only murders in the building
should win: Sara Naftalis- What we do in the shadows
