Utes will move to full pads later this week

SALT LAKE CITY –Fall camp is progressing well for the Utah football program as the Utes enter their second week on the field. The Utes were out on Sunday and will don full pads for the first time later this week.

Monday was another sunny day in Salt Lake with temperatures hovering around 80 degrees.

“It was a bit of a slow start today,” the head coach said. Kyle Whittingham. “After a day off, it happens sometimes. It took us a minute to get into the groove, but we finished strong. Overall it was a positive day. It’s day 5, we’re entering So at the heart of the Grind. The game is still a long way out there – we have to stay focused, stay mentally strong, keep grinding. That’s what it is right now.

Newcomers progress through learning the playbook and daily life of a Utah football student-athlete, guided by an experienced group of returnees – 60 in total with 17 starters returning from the team 2021.

Junior wide receiver Tiquan Gilmorenow with the Utes after three seasons at the junior collegiate level, noticed an increased level of competition on the field and embraced it fully.

“I feel that the level of competition [is different]“, said the native of Los Angeles. “At the college level, you have children who do not play, some who take it lightly. Everyone here is a superstar. Everyone is trying to play. Everyone tries to be that best dog. [Utah] is a place where I like to be.”

QUOTES – HEAD COACH KYLE WITTINGHAM
On the backup quarterback battle…

“It looks good. We’re not going to make a decision until the first scrum. But Ja’Quinden Jackson looks good, Bryson Barnes does a good job. Nate Johnson is showing up really well… we have a lot of good candidates, there are just [not separation] at present. Hopefully after this melee there will be some.”

On what are the most urgent points at the moment…

“As for the starters, solidifying the offensive line and working together [is up there], which we are very close to doing. The backup quarterback is a focal point. Also, the secondary depth and making sure we’ve got the secondary sorted.”

On the punting situation…

“[I feel] much, much better. We do a much better job kicking football. Jack Bouwmeester hits the ball really well. He has a strong leg. We should be much better at it.”

On the depth of the receiving body…

“It’s moving forward. We have the proven four or five guys who have been here for a while and then four or five guys who are brand new. That’s another area of focus of trying to sort out these young guys and see who is going to be among these seven or eight guys traveling with us.”
