Gameweek 1 is in the books and, admit it, you’re already thinking about playing your joker, aren’t you?
But before you erase those Southampton defenders, Chelsea strikers or Manchester United players from any description on your screen, maybe take a deep breath. Fantasy Football is a marathon, not a sprint.
We’ll try to demonstrate this with our weekly updates on the leaders in each player position. You can see how the pattern gradually emerges over the season, who is a flash in the pan and who is here to stay.

Fantasy Football: the best goalkeepers
It’s a pretty simple category to go through after the first gameweek: did you keep a clean sheet? Come down! from Chelsea Edouard Mendy and that of Manchester City Ederson lead the way with seven points each. Mendy made three saves in the Blues’ 1-0 win at Everton, while Ederson was generally underworked in the traditional goalkeeping aspects, producing a routine save but still earning a bonus point for his overall contribution as City beat West Ham.
There were also clean sheets for Aaron Ramsdale, Nick Pope and Marc Travers after Arsenal, Newcastle United and Bournemouth all opened with 2-0 wins.

Fantasy Football: the best defenders
In front of Ramsdale, Oleksandr Zinchenko had a stellar start at Arsenal. The diminutive Ukraine international provided an unlikely header for Gabriel Martinelli’s opener and his all-around contribution helped rack up three bonus points.
A total of 12 made Zinchenko the second-highest scoring defender behind Fabien Scher, thanks to the Newcastle man who arguably smashed the goal of the weekend to break the deadlock against Nottingham Forest. Schar’s 15 points overtook Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kellywho tied Zinchenko with an assist and a full streak of bonus points.
Ben Chilwell was brought down for Chelsea’s decisive penalty at Goodison Park and fellow winger Emerson Royal notched a pair of assists in Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win over Southampton to give them both nine points.

Fantasy Football: the best midfielders
Dejan Kulusevsky was the star of this Spurs rout, setting up Ryan Sessegnon’s opener and capitalizing on Emerson’s good work to complete the scoring. That gave the Sweden international 13 points, two more than Jorginhothe beneficiary of Chilwell drawing a foul from Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure.
Between these two with 12 points is Mohammad Salah (Yes, he is still listed as a midfielder) after playing Darwin Nunez before throwing in to save a point for Liverpool at Fulham.
But leading the way is Raw after his double for Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford. Gross now has six career goals against United – he really gave you a warning just to put him on your side!

Fantasy Football: best strikers
Danny Welbeck excelled against his former club, netting Gross’ opening goal for seven points, making him Gameweek 1’s fifth-best striker. Ivan ToneyBrentford’s goal to spark Brentford’s comeback in the 2-2 draw at Leicester City gave him eight points in aggregate as he joined Welbeck in claiming two bonus points.
A battle of golden shoes between Nunez and Haaland is expected by many and the Uruguay international came off the bench to score and assist at Craven Cottage. His nine-point run was bettered by Haaland, who scored both goals a day later across London for City at West Ham to end the weekend with 13 – the same as the two-goal executioner of Liverpool. mitrovic.
Haaland, Nunez, Mitrovic and Toney – this may really be the season when big men make big statements.
