TERRE HAUTE, Ind. –Indiana State Football opened US Lawns Fall Football Camp Wednesday morning as the Sycamores took to the field at Memorial Stadium for their first of 12 scheduled pre-school practices beginning Aug. 16.

The head coach Curt MalloryThe team went through a quick two-hour practice slate on grass as the Sycamores endured the heat of Terre Haute August. Despite the warm temperatures, it was obvious that coaches and players were thrilled to be back on the court together for the first time since Spring Ball.

“When we had a tour this morning, you could just see the energy and the excitement,” Mallory said. “It was just unreal with this team and their closeness and love for each other, and the game is real.”

With Sycamore’s coaching staff and player interaction being limited this summer, the team went to work at the Mike and Mary Blackwell Sports Performance Center.

“We had a really good summer,” Mallory said. “It was all player driven and you could see the results on the pitch. Coach (Dave) McManus worked them hard and the guys put in the effort to get ready to play football this fall.”

The Sycamores were selected 10th in the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s annual preseason poll, as announced by the conference office Tuesday afternoon. Mallory made sure the team was made aware of the pick during the first team meeting and he will remain present as the team continues to progress through fall camp.

“I think it’s something you remember every day and we’ll have to play with a chip on our shoulder,” Mallory said. “Right now, as we continue through camp, our main focus is to get better every day and then even better the next day. We have a lot to improve on after today and have mistakes that need to be cleaned up, and we will.”

Indiana State returns a number of veteran field leaders, including All-Conference preseason wide receiver Dante Hendrix and defensive end Kris Reid, Jr. One thing that stood out to Mallory as he looked around the field Wednesday was the amount of experience and the depth of the roster.

“We have a lot of guys who have been on the program and know their time is right,” Mallory commented. “They can’t wait to get out there and you can feel that today on the pitch. I think the effort and the attitude with our guys is great. We have great coaches who will continue to build them. Right now, we have to enjoy every rehearsal and be locked up every day until the start of the school year.”

The Sycamores are back on the field for day two of US Lawns Fall Football Camp beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday morning at Memorial Stadium.
