A notable trend in college football recruiting is that many high school players want to complete their recruiting before their senior football seasons begin and the same is true for many Clemson football targets. If these players haven’t announced their college destination yet, they will likely do so sometime in August.
Clemson’s class of 2023 currently has eighteen verbal commitments. The perception of many insiders is that the Tigers have filled their quota in many positions, but there are a few that they are still actively recruiting.
The most likely announcement that could impact the Tigers class will come on Monday morning. Cornerback Shelton Lewis will announce at 9:30 a.m.
Lewis is a rising senior at Stockbridge High School in Georgia. He is a 3-star recruit of 247 Composite. He currently has two Crystal Balls projecting him to select Clemson. If Lewis verbally commits to the Tigers, it will likely shut down their cornerback group for this cycle.
Heading into the season, Clemson football recruiting has a few remaining positions that need to be addressed
There are two other prospects that Clemson has recruited who have been heavily linked to Clemson by insiders. Athlete Ronan Hanafin is a 4-star prospect at Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Clemson considers him a wide receiver. He is also strongly considering Notre Dame. Insiders have accused Hanafin of wanting to decide before the start of his high school season. If he chooses to make this decision public, we can expect him to announce it in August.
Clemson also recruited Kayden McDonald, a 4-star defensive lineman from North Gwinnett High School in Suwanee, Georgia. McDonald’s doesn’t appear to be aiming for a decision in August, but plans may change. McDonald’s currently has a crystal ball for Clemson.
I think it’s starting to look very positive that Clemson will have 20 members in its class of 2023 at some point during August. If they don’t reach that point this month, I don’t think it will take too long in the season to get there.
I also expect Clemson to continue recruiting as the season progresses. All signs point to them not finishing at the defensive end and yet to add a running back to this class. Additionally, in-season contrition from players entering the transfer portal could influence the Tigers to look for prospects to fill those spots. I think it’s always Clemson’s preference to find high school prospects to fill their scholarships over transfers from other schools.
