The Punisher is coming back, says Rosario Dawson

The Punisher is coming to Disney+ as stated by Rosario Dawson. The Marvel’s Cinematic Universe has enjoyed huge success with its many Disney+ shows, but Marvel’s street heroes made their home on Netflix long before Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel championed the small screen. One of the most popular shows on the site was The Punisher. Now, it’s “happening again,” according to former Marvel star Rosario Dawson, three years after she ended that bloody adaptation.

Last weekend at the Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo (C2E2), Dawson made the announcement during a panel. Dawson played Claire Temple for most of the Netflix Marvel series. This includes Daredevil, Luke Cage, and The Defenders, but that’s not much to go on. She essentially served as the Netflix version of Marvel’s Night Nurse character. The debate over the canonical status of characters like Daredevil and The Punisher used to be heavy. Now, however, it’s clear that both characters are canon to the MCU and coming with their own series.

Rosario Dawson did not appear in The Punisher

Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher was one of the few shows she didn’t appear on, the actress acknowledged. Dawson seems to want to change that by taking part in the proposed new series. The Punisher on Netflix made its debut in the second season of Daredevil before departing to form her own show in 2017. During C2E2, Dawson also praised Jon Bernthal’s performance as the renowned violent hero. Bernthal’s interpretation of the Punisher would be the image that would appear next to the description of “perfect casting” in the dictionary. Although the show only lasted two seasons, it was every bit as excellent as Daredevil.

The series delivered everything a Punisher fan could want: It was nasty, gory, and intensely emotional, and Bernthal gave an outstanding performance. Since playing this legendary character in his breakout role, Bernthal has been in high demand, appearing in movies like Ford v Ferrari, Those Who Wish Me Dead, King Richard, and TV shows like We Own This Town. Given SDCC’s announcement that Charlie Cox’s Daredevil would return in a new 18-episode series called Daredevil: Born Again, it shouldn’t be too surprising that The Punisher would return in some capacity in the MCU.

The bloody show is already on Disney +

The Punisher’s transition to Disney+ earlier this year, along with the other Marvel Netflix shows, provided another clue. As Dawson’s comments aren’t an official announcement, it’s unknown if Bernthal will return, but given how well-known the actor is and that Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio will also appear in Born Again, that’s certainly a safe guess. Perhaps even, as it did in its Netflix iteration, The Punisher will come full circle and make its MCU debut in the next Daredevil series. When D23 takes place next month, we’ll be keeping an eye out for more information on The Punisher.

If Marvel Studios is willing to match the intense, R-rated tone of the Netflix series, it will be interesting to watch.
