The Sandman: Netflix issues a statement after complaints from viewers

Netflixthe new fantasy series, The Sandmanmade its debut on the streaming platform on Friday, and while viewers wasted no time getting caught up in the gripping drama, some couldn’t help but comment on some seemingly biased footage.

While many viewers questioned whether the show’s weird aspect ratio was due to a technical error, Netflix was quick to issue a statement explaining the matter.

Confirming that the image distortion is deliberate, a spokesperson for the streaming site said: “As you’ll notice, a lot of the environments are surreal in the series. and we often say that’s exactly what it would feel like in a dream.”

The clarification comes after fan confusion over the stretched footage. One person tweeted: “Does the picture look a little vertically stretched to anyone else or is there something wrong with my TV?” while another added: “See #TheSandman and find the slightly stretched aspect ratio (if that’s the right term?) Image a bit off putting. Everything and everyone seems a bit exaggerated vertically. Am I alone in this? Is it a technological problem or a creative design choice?

For those unfamiliar with the series, it is a fantasy drama based on the 1989–1996 comic book published by DC Comics. The show follows Morpheus, aka Dream, who is captured in an occult ritual in 1916 and after being held captive for decades, escapes and attempts to rebuild his kingdom from The Dreaming.

Tom plays Morpheus in the fantasy drama.

Tom Sturridge stars as Morpheus alongside Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, and Jenna Coleman who plays Johanna Constantine.

The official synopsis reads: “A rich blend of modern myth and dark fantasy in which contemporary fictionHistorical drama and legend seamlessly intertwined, The Sandman follows the people and places affected by Morpheus, the King of Dreams, as he undoes the cosmic and human mistakes he has made during his vast existence.”
