The musical film will see a limited release in theaters on December 9 and a streaming release on Netflix on December 25. The world premiere of the film opens the BFI London Film Festival on October 5.
Based on the 1988 children’s novel by Roald Dahl, the film stars Emma Thompson as Miss Trunchbull and newcomer Alisha Weir in the title role, along with Lashana Lynch as Miss Honey, Sindhu Vee as Mrs. Phelps, and Stephen Graham and Andrea Riseborough as Mr. and Mrs. Wormwood.
Matilda the musical follows Matilda Wormwood, a curious young woman with dubious and absent parents, who is encouraged by her inspiring teacher, Miss Honey. Matilda’s excitement about attending Crunchem Hall is altered by the discovery that the school is an oppressive place run by the evil Miss Trunchbull.
The Tony and Olivier award-winning stage production was adapted for the big screen by musical book author Dennis Kelly, with original music and lyrics by Tim Minchin. Having directed both West End and Broadway productions, Tony winner Matthew Warchus returned to direct the Netflix film. Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner of Working Title and Jon Finn and Luke Kelly of The Roald Dahl Story Company serve as producers.
The stage musical played on stages in New York City, New Zealand, Korea, Toronto and London’s West End, where it opened in 2011 and is still running.
