Western Broome residents puzzled by series of ‘explosions’

Some people in western Broome County were concerned when they heard what sounded like loud explosions.

Residents of Ross Corners told WNBF News there were three or four “explosions” over a period of about an hour late Wednesday morning.

A man who lives on Arlington Avenue was mystified by all the racketeering. He reported: “We hear very loud bangs shaking houses.”

The man said the final blast happened around 11.35 a.m. while he was outside his home. He said “it sounded like a cannon shot”. He said he “could feel it in the ground”.

Another street resident described auditory booms that were “like a sound wave”. But he wasn’t worried because he had heard similar noises before and realized they were coming from a site used by the Endicott Police Department’s bomb squad.

The man said it had been about a year since he last heard similar explosions. But because he had an idea of what was going on, “I didn’t mind”.

Endicott Police Chief Patrick Garey confirmed that his agency’s bomb disposal unit was conducting training at the Tri-Cities Airport at the time. The airport is directly across the Susquehanna River from Ross Corners.

Garey said the team sometimes detonated training devices or items seized by his department or other area police departments. He said deminers use the airport site for training throughout the year.
